Computer is running slow

Based on warranty sold, CLH will make sure that the hardware is functioning normally under specific warranty guidelines for hardware and the operating system. However, software troubleshooting will be billable if the problem does not reside in hardware failure or OS failure.

As the majority of any system reported as "running slow" with no other failures being seen, it is CLH's experience that the issue is based on software rather than hardware.  Some information we can provide to help troubleshoot the issue before a CLH technician works on this unit.

Why does this computer runs slow?

  • It is possible that your computer may have so many background programs running that there is not enough main memory to run your main programs including Anti-Virus issues or a botched upload of definition files or issues with perhaps a virus or worm that has come past the anti-virus program. 
  • Check your Task Manager to see if there are unusual programs running or your CPU is running excessively high.
  • Your hard drive could be too full of data to function efficiently.
  • Has the proper updates been administered to the OS and other software?
  • Your computer could have a fragmented hard drive - run defrag on the drive.
  • If you have 512 MB of memory or less, you may not have enough system memory to run your software efficiently.
  • You could have old or conflicting Windows device drivers.
  • As each new Windows program is installed and uninstalled, it leaves behind parts of itself that can slow down or crash your computer.

Otherwise, reimaging or reloading Windows into a new directory, which will eliminate all old junk and leftover files. This is something to do last, as you will also have to reload all your Windows settings, drivers, and programs.  In situations like this, a CLH technician will test equipment with a different hard drive to determine if there are hardware issues or software issues.  Once troubleshooting starts, if a software fix is the solution, time will be billed from time starting onsite at a 1 hour minimum.  If the solution is based on hardware, it will be considered a Warranty fix.
